The full moon falls on Shab e-Barat, and the date of the public holiday in Bangladesh is determined by the sighting of the previous new moon, which marks the beginning of the month of Sha’aban. This year, Shab e Barat 2023 is expected to be on the night of Monday, March 06, 2023. However, the exact date is subject to the sighting of the moon of Shaban, in 1444.

How do Muslims in Bangladesh celebrate Shab e-Barat?
Many Muslims in Bangladesh would fast the day after Shab e-Barat night, while some may donate food and sweets to their neighbours and the ones in poor. Throughout the night of Shab e-Barat, they will offer special prayers, recite the Holy Qur’an, and do all the other religious rites in the hopes of receiving heavenly blessings for their well-being for the year ahead.
They would also pay respects to their loved ones’ graves and wish for their souls’ peace. Charities are also given to the ones in need to cherish Shab e-Barat.
History and significance of Shab e-Barat
Shab e-Barat occurs all night and into the early afternoon the following day. It is believed that if prayers are presented to Almighty Allah throughout Shab e-Barat, forgiveness for prior sins will be obtained and good fortune will be ensured for the future year. Some Muslims are also fasting for the entire Shab e-Barat day and a day after.
That is why the Shab e-Barat is a night full of blessings for all Muslims and this night has special characteristics that Muslims need to observe:
1. Tasqeem-e-umur: death and birth, happiness and sadness, victory and defeat.
2. Faizaan e Bakhshish: granting of forgiveness
3. Nazool e Rahmat: blessing
4. Qabool e Shifaat: acceptance of intercession
5. Fazeelat e Ibaadat: the greatness of worship

Shab-e-Barat is an important Islamic event that is observed on the 15th night (the night on the 15th only) of the month of Sha'ban, the eighth month of the Islamic calendar.
